The Canon L1 is a 35mm rangefinder camera that accepts M39 threadmount lenses. The L1 was introduced in 1957 at the same time as the Model VT Deluxe. Very similar to the VT Deluxe in many ways, the L1 omits the winding trigger in the base of the camera opting for the more traditional winding lever atop the camera body. The L1 also lacks a self-timer. It has a focal plane shutter capable of a 1/1000 top speed, with speeds 1/30 and below controlled via a slow speed dial on the face of the camera. The viewfinder of the L1 features three different magnification settings appropriate for framing with 50mm or 35mm lenses, or for critical focusing.
If you want a nifty bit of historical trivia to go with your camera, the Canon L1 was the first camera to win the Good Design Award by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry for its clean and simple design.
This is an early production version of the L1 that has a cloth focal plane shutter.
